Carnarvon provides a lot of attractions. The Carnarvon Space Tracking Station has a museum. This station was significantly involved in the moon landing in 1969 and is still a main attraction for young and old people today. You receive the opening times at the tourist information center in the town. Another attraction is the lighthous Cottage Museum. If you want to experience dolphins very closely, we recommend a trip with the hover craft from Carnarvon to Monkey Mia – Shark bay. There you can feed the dolphins. You get more information from the Tourist Bureau in the Robinson Street - (08) 9941 1146. Also well-known are the so-called Blowholes with meters long water jets. The Korean Star nearby Carnarvon is a stranded ship in front of the coast. |

13.1) Diving areas, wracks & caves in the region of Carnarvon |

At the coast of Shark Bay are some smaller cities, from which Denham and Carnarvon take the center stage. Generally the best diving conditions are in the Australian winter and spring.
Info - South Passage The sea bottom, in a depth of only 7m, is only sparsely covered with stone corals and other types of invertebrates, but provides habitat for many different animals of the sea, like the sea snake, turtles, reef sharks, stingrays, wobbegongs, crawfish, violin ray, coral lip fish and other reef fish.
Info - Dorre Island The east side of Dorre Island provides first-class diving conditions. In this region some of the most beautiful coral gardens of Shark Bay are located.
Info - Monkey Rock The reef at Monkey Rock slopes about 16m deep and accomodates a wide range of animals, e.g. lionfish, lip fish, blowfish, moranes, parrotfish, reef perch, butterfly fish, emperon fish, sweet lips, doctorfish, cluster perch, scorpion fish, nudibranchs, starfish, hair star, mussels and others.
Info - Bernier Island On the east side of the Bernier Island you encounter an extraordinary fish richness. On almost every dives, you face emperor fish, doctor fish, reef perchs, anemone fish, boxfish, blowfish, filefish, gudgeons, sting mackerel, blennies, lip fish, stone perchs, coral perchs and reef sharks.
Info - Point Quobba On the north peak of the Shark Bay, in front of Point Quobba, wonderful coral gardens flourish in shallow water. Reef and lagune are accessable from the coast.
Info - Coral Bay 155km to the south of Exmouth placed Coral Bay is the perfect place to start with the exploration of the Ningaloo Reef. The reef is under the control of stone corals. Turtles, reef sharks, sweet lips, mackerels, coral lip fish and swarms of barracudas and sting mackerels are living at the edge of the reef.
Info - Norwegina Bay Slightly northerly, along the coast line of the Norwegion Bay, you often encounter turtles, stingrays, sweet lips, stone perchs, emperor fish, doctor fish and numerous types of invertebrates.
Info - Mandu Wall Like many diving areas on the outside of the Ningaloo Reef, also Mandu Wall slopes about 21m deep, but has only a moderate coral growth. Anyway, the fish richness is amazing: on a flow dive, you can face sting mackerels, barracudas, coral lip fish, coral perchs, sweet lips, bat fish, fusiliers, squirrel fish, reef sharks and countless reef fish.
Info - Blizzard Ridge The bottom of the Blizzard Ridge, which is placed in a depth of only 16m, is covered with impressive colonies of colourful soft-corals, sponges and gorgonias.
Info - North West Reef The reef wall of the North West Reef has numerous trenches, shelves and caves. In the glow of the torche you will recognize the bright colours of the soft-corals, gorgonias, and the other cave inhabitants.
Info - Bundegi Reef The Bundegi Reef, which is placed at the inner peak of the North West Cape, has an unusal diversity of invertebrates: mollusces, nudibranches, flatworms, starfish, sea cucumber, hair stars, pipeworms, anemones, shrimps and crabbs. |
