1.1) History of the region of Coober Pedy |
|
| |
Coober Pedy comes from the language of the Aboriginals, who named this place “Kupa Piti”, “white man in the hole”. In 1911, they found the first opals in Coober Pedy. Almost 80% of the decoration opals are from Coober Pedy. Many miners and those who wanted to become them searched for nothing. Many of them digged for years without a nameable finding. Other became rich from one hour to the other. Coober Pedy was film location for MAD MAX 3. MAD MAX 2 was shoot in Broken Hill. |

2.1) Attractions of the region of Coober Pedy |
|
| |
Primarily Coober Pedy is known for its opals. The first opals were found in this region in 1911. Today, about 2000 people are living in this dry but not unattractive area. The opal museum (Umoona Opal Mine & Museum) is a must for every Coober Pedy visitor. Tours are at 10am, 12am, 2pm and 4pm every day. You have the opportunity to find opals on the tour! 15km to the northeast of Coober Pedy you can find the “Dog Fence”. This 5300km long fence starts in Queensland and ends to the north of Ceduna. This fence was built to protect the sheep against the dingos. But unfortunately, many animals die in this dangerous fence. Many kangaroos, emus, saurians and other animals perish baleful here. Today we know the the dingo killed only a few sheep. The Australian themselves probably don’t know why they hold up this senseless fence. They yearly spend shoals of money to maintain this fence. More attractions in Coober Bay are the Underground Café’s, galleries, hotels and potteries. Worth a visit is also the Mintabie (nearby Marla). There is an Open Cut mining area of opals. Although Mintabie is not as famous as Coober Pedy, the quality of the opals must not be underrated. You can buy cheap opals in Coober Pedy or in Minabie. You can make a good stroke of business when you negotiate directly with the miners, if you are familiar with opals! |

|
| |
Treasure-hunting in Australia is also known there as “Fossicking”. So called treasures are everywhere in Australia. The only problem is to find this “everywhere”, because who has already been in Down Under yet, knows, how difficult different regions are to find. We also had this problem. We bought a lot of books in Australia. There, countless Fossicking Areas were listed and also described, but it hasn’t been a real help for us. First, many of this so called Fossicking Areas were exploited and on the other hand it has been much too dangerous in parts. This is why we decided to list those Fossicking Areas, which you can find without “big problems”. And to see that the found stones are not valueless, you can survey them in our Australian Shop. In 4 years, there have come up over 149 PDF files in this way. Further information about the subject Fossicking can be found here: http://fossicking.fly-to-australia.com/ . |
