1.1) History of the region of Alice Springs |
|
| |
Alice Springs lies 576m over sea level at the mostly desiccated Todd River. During the construction of the telegraph cables they discovered the north-eastern springs, of which the city owes its name. Before the arrival of the Europeans, this area was the home of the Aranda Aboriginals, who have lived here for 10 000 years. The telegraph station, which was built in 1871-72 in Alice Springs, was the first European building in central Australia. |

1.2) A part of the history - the Warumpi Band |
|
| |
Those who like Australian music, surely also know the Warumpi Band from the region of Alice Springs (NT). The instrumentation changed again and again. But Gordon, Sammy, Neil and George can be considered as the ur-instrumentation of the band. The name Warumpi comes from a honey ant – sanctuary near of Papunya (about 260km to the west of Alice Springs). The Warumpi Band wrote and published their first song in their Aboriginal language: “Jailanguru Pakarnu” (out of jail) in 1983. In 1984 more impressive songs followed like: "BIG NAME NO BLANKETS", "Blackfella/Whitefella", "Breadline" and "Fitzroy Crossing". In 1985, the band toured across Australia and even overseas as to: New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The Warumpi Band joined the rock band Midnight Oil in 1986 for a month through the Aboriginal Communities and recorded the songs "Go Bush", "From the Bush" and the most famous song “My Island Home”. Because we loved My Island Home that much, we will give you the text: Six years i have lived in the desert, every night i dreamt of the sea. Now i'm living west of Alice Springs with a wife and a family. My island home, my island home, my island home is waiting for me. I come from the salt water people, we always live by the sea. They say home is where you find it, will this place satisfy me. My island home, my island home, my island home is waiting for me. In the evening the dry wind blows, from the hill and across the plains. I close my eyes and i'm standing, in a boat on the sea again. And i'm holding that long turtle spear and i feel i'm close now to where it must be. My island home is waiting for me. My island home, my island home, my island home is waiting for me. You can find more information about the Warumpi Band here: http://www.fly-to-australia.com/Australien-Info/warumpi/australien_warumpi_band.html . On the 13th October 2000, the Warumpi Band played for the last time on the Broome’s Stompem Ground Festival. Some smaller concerts have followed, but since 2003 it got very calm. Perhaps one day the Warumpi Band will play again for their fans. We hope that so much and we will be very happy. But unfortunately this will happen without the frontman George Burrarrawanga, George died after a long illness at the age of 50 on the 10th June 2007. "He'll leave a great hole in the heart for many," Mr. Snowdon said. |

Treasure-hunting in Australia is also known there as “Fossicking”. So called treasures are everywhere in Australia. The only problem is to find this “everywhere”, because who has already been in Down Under yet, knows, how difficult different regions are to find. We also had this problem. We bought a lot of books in Australia. There, countless Fossicking Areas were listed and also described, but it hasn’t been a real help for us. First, many of this so called Fossicking Areas were exploited and on the other hand it has been much too dangerous in parts. This is why we decided to list those Fossicking Areas, which you can find without “big problems”. And to see that the found stones are not valueless, you can survey them in our Australian Shop. In 4 years, there have come up over 149 PDF files in this way. Further information about the subject Fossicking can be found here: http://fossicking.fly-to-australia.com/ . |
